A day in court for non-payment of the TV licence: ‘What do they want us to do, kill ourselves?’

‘There is a lot of anger simmering around the crowded stairwell outside court number six, where 158 court hearings are listed for non-payment of television licence fees. About 20 people have turned up at Highbury Corner magistrates court, north London, to contest the imposition of a fine; the start time of 10am has arrived and passed, and nothing has happened. The court clerk comes to hand out means-testing sheets, so that defendants on a low income can request a reduction in their fine. Since almost everyone here is on a low income, they crowd around to take the sheets. There’s a call for a Turkish interpreter.

One man has brought his television with him, thinking that handing over the set will be the simplest way of solving the problem, but he has been prevented from bringing it up to the courtroom by security and has had to leave it with guards downstairs.’

‘Recently, Techdirt has been following the Australian government’s moves to bring in intrusive new surveillance powers. The “justification” for all this is, of course, “terrorism”, which has become the lazy politician’s excuse for everything, and has already led to episodes of ridiculous over-reaction in Australia. So it hardly comes as a surprise that the worsening situation in the Middle East has brought forth even more of the same, in the form of the “Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment (Foreign Fighters) Bill 2014″ (pdf). Germany Calls to Legalise Incest

‘Germany’s national ethics council has called for an end to the criminalisation of incest between siblings after examining the case of a man who had four children with his sister.

Patrick Stuebing, who was adopted as an infant and met his sister in his 20s, has launched several appeals since being imprisoned for incest in 2008 and his lengthy legal battle has prompted widespread public debate.

Sexual relations between siblings or between parents and their children are forbidden under section 173 of the German criminal code and offenders can face years in prison.’
